Sabbatical will begin... in a bit (Part 4)
When last we spoke I was well down the road of prepping for my sabbatical. Things have changed now.
Succinctly put, there has been a chain reaction of staffing at MPOW due to the retirement of our University Librarian. As result of some shuffling I've accepted the position of Acting Head, Library Systems & Technologies for the period of July 1, 2014 to June 30 2015. I gotta say I'm looking forward to trying out management.
All the incidentals when pretty smoothly. I contacted my Supervisor and and let her know about the situation and she was very supportive of the deferral plan. She suggested that I switch into part time studies starting in the fall, take the classes that I can and next fall (September 2015) begin sabbatical to complete the last class or so and to finish writing my thesis. I have to admit this sounds like a better plan then what I outlined earlier. Now instead of taking the year to complete my course work, and then coming back to work and trying to complete a thesis at the same time, I do the course work (well the bulk of it) before going on sabbatical where I can focus on wrirting my dissertation. This can potentially help me complete the program almost a year earlier then I originally planned. (Ie, I might be able to have most of the thesis done by September 2016, that would probably be out of the question if I had to write it at night and on weekends) After this discussion the Department revised my offer of admission and pow, things are now on task. Many thanks to the COSC Department at Brock for doing this for me.
On the other side of the coin I needed to do some paperwork to officially defer my sabbatical for a year. This is spelled out in our Collective Agreement, article 34.02 k.:
Members who have had a leave approved and who have voluntarily postponed a leave need not reapply but may take the leave subsequently with the approval of the University Librarian or the Dean, as appropriate, for up to one (1) year.
I wrote requesting the deferral and should hear official confirmation soon.
Rolling with the punches as it were.
