Frankenstein for Fun and Profit
I've now had LIS_Grievances up for about a year. Seeing the invoice for my hosting and DNS renewal made me feel nostalgic, thinking about what I was trying to do with it in the beginning. Obviously it was to harness the power of snark so so so abundant amongst us professional information wranglers. Harness that snark and wrap it up with an anomymous interface and it is ready to be a gift for the trolls.
I've probably talked about this many times over but how it works is pretty simple. You send @lis_grievances a DM and it gets read by a script. Your personal information is scrubbed and the message is plopped in an approval queue in the form of a Google Spreadsheet. The grievance then gets transfered to a hopper where another script will post it to the account on behalf of the grievor and the author gets a post secret moment in twitter form. The software I wrote is on github if you wish to check how anonymous it is. Big thanks to JD who added some features to the platform.
I realize there is an amount of trust involved in this whole procedure but I can tell you I have never, or will never be tempted in looking into who posted what.
What I find most interesting however is that it didn't get overrun by cruel intentions or negative salacious insults (yet anyway) It turned out to be exactly what I'd hoped.
I've avoided posting some submissions that mention people by name or in fact product name. Or the submissions that obviously aren't LIS based but legit gripes. (hint: 45)
No one will ever get an @ reply from the account. Sometimes there is a good follow up zinger that is replied that should be starred or RT'd. Just based on the dynamics of what is going on it would be impossible to retain the anonymity. Plus I think it is good as is.
It will never follow anyone either. Probably as a show of respect I should have it follow some like minded LIS based satire but I haven't found anything that fits the bill for that.
The bot is on the verge of getting more follows then me. Not to say I'm some sort of Twitter dynamo I'm just comparing the amount of time. It took me from 2009 to present to get there, ol' grievy guts got there in less then 12 months.
I was blessed and humbled to be able to present at Access last year about Mr. G. People laughed when they were supposed to.
People are actually using it!
I even put out a tip jar on the site and actually recieved something in it. (All proceeds go into running the account.)
When I hit some sort of milestone I'll download the account data and make if available somewhere. I'd like to do some tweet analysis and make up some visualizations. Maybe grievances with swear words perform better, that is something I need to investigate. I think after the 1000th tweet I'll do all that. Seems like a good milestone that will produce a nice large corpus of info.
Any chance to get meta-meta is a party I'm going to.
My least favorite:
Neither one of these is one I've submitted btw.
I know I'm basking in the reflection of LIS_Grievances, so I'll acknowledge that. There are times when I think that this endevour is divisive but good things come out of conflicts sometime.
